Pattaya first ever IT center

Pattaya first ever IT center, known as TukCom is now open in South Pattaya. TukCom is very much like the famous Pantip Plaza in Bangkok. TukCom does not only have computer related stuff but also mobile phones and even clothing store.

TukCom - IT center
TukCom- IT center

General information:

  • TukCom is located in South Pattaya road, near Soi Daynight.
  • TukCom has 8 floors with the total area of 18,000 sqm
  • Parking space for 500 cars is available only outside the building area.
  • TukCom is open from 10:30am - 11:00pm on weekdays and 10:00am - 11:00pm on weekend and public holidays.

TukCom floor by floor:

  • Underground floor are filled with clothing stores
  • Some shops on Ground floor : Tsutaya VCD, DVD rentals store, S & P restaurant, Starbucks coffee, Giordano, and many more
  • Mobile phone vendors are on Second floor.
  • Computer Hardwares and Softwares stores are on Third & Fourth floor.
  • Food Court on the Top most floor.

Pantip Practice:

Getting Microsoft office CD for $50 might seem like a bargain already. But in TukCom a Microsoft office CD is around 100 - 150 Baht or roughly $3 - $4. Also since MS office does not take up all the CD-rom space, the pirate-copyists has added other software program as a bonus in just 1 cd. It is common to find pirated copies of the latest MP3, DVD movies and softwares in Pantip Plaza.

Piracy is serious business here in Thailand. Cost of a blank CD is about 5 Baht. The total investment on a single copied CD, after CD burning process, should not be more than 15 Baht. Even if a CD is sold for 100 Baht, that's a profit of 85 Baht, about 700% of the cost price!

Because of the Government effort to crack down on pirated CDs, some vendors may not display their CD collections in their stores. They often would allow you to pick out the CDs that you want from a catalog and make your order. Once you have made the payment, you will be given a ticket with numbers on them and will be told to probably come back again after 10 or 15 minutes to collect your stuff upon presenting the ticket. During this time the vendors are out to get the CDs from their secret CDs hiding place, to be safe from the police.

This is a common practice in Pantip Plaza in Bangkok. I'm not personally sure about TukCom in Pattaya.

TUKCOM Pattaya is long overdue for demolition and best avoided.

Hmm... Lot of uninformed opinions here... OK, I m a computer nerd... built my first computer from a kit back when you had to write your own programs... And I live in Thailand when I m not working somewhere else...

So:
-Some of the shops will rip you off and not give good service... others will do their best for you. (Gee, just like home!)
(Pantip Plaza, Tukcom or Pantip 2, all same story, be cautious)
-Some of the shop personnel DO speak English, look until you find someone you can communicate with, even if what you want is in a different shop the English speaker will be happy to intercede, as he can probably wangle a bit of a commission out of the seller, if you are pleasant enough, he may even get you a better price than you could have gotten on your own. BE POLITE, it pays!
- Ask about any guarantee before you puchase, often there will be a short replacement guarantee, thereafter any warranty would be the manufacturer s. An extended warranty may be available and may or may not be a global warranty... ask, if it s an issue for you. Just like in the US that s not going to be free.
- If you are worried about getting ripped off go either all the way to the top floor (5th Floor Tuk-com Pantip the 6th floor or the 2nd floor to the large shop on the opposite corner from the food vendors) and pay a little more, everything they sell in those stores is legal and their service departments far more trustworthy than selecting a shop at random. They can also refer you to the appropriate service center if they can t fix it... If you have questions, they ll round up someone who can answer your questions or translate for you... you may or may not get someone who knows the answers... again, just like home though you sometimes get someone who knows less than you do or a bullshi# artist... that s life... deal with it.
- Do be polite, don t be arrogant and you ll do much better. If you re a tourist ask about tax rebates, if available, you will need to allow extra time at the airport to get your money.
- Manufacture s warranties may be problematic depending on where you are going with the product.
I stress to you: be polite, if you want to be treated well, also be clean and presentable this shows respect. You ARE in Asia, and guess what? It s a different culture... If you are loud, obnoxious and stinking of sweat in your grungy shirt and shorts, you ARE offending people right, left and center, but VERY few would ever make that apparent to you, it would be even more rude than YOU!
As for unlocking phones, the above poster is correct, it s not that hard, google it until you find what you need, download or buy it and presto... Google is your friend.
