The Age of Desire

Pattaya is quite possibly the best place for a single man to settle down in, especially those who may be a little past their ‘sell by’ date! If you can manage it, Thailand is a wonderful place to live, great weather, great food, friendly people and a seemingly endless supply of beautiful women.

For men over 50 living in the West, their options for a relationship of any kind are rather limited. They can hook up with women near their own age, usually divorced with kids and embittered about the failure of their marriage, what the Americans refer to as ‘baggage’ or, if they are very wealthy, they can attract younger, glamorous women who expect plenty of financial benefits from their sugar daddy.

In Pattaya, they see that things are different, everywhere there are older men (clearly not rich guys) with lovely young women. Some of them quickly latch on to a girl they meet, usually in a bar and many of them completely lose their mind. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve heard of old geezers who have lost everything to a young woman who had a Thai husband all along. They buy houses in their name, set up businesses in their name only to end up with a broken heart, an empty bank account and their old tail between their legs as they go back home to a bleak future.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way at all! For every lying, scheming bar girl, there are hundreds of wonderful Thai women, looking for a good, sincere man. Some of them do work in bars, though obviously that is not the best place to look for a serious relationship. There are great girls everywhere, working in hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, you name it.

I think for an older man to be truly happy here, he needs to face certain facts. If he is in his sixties for example and has a girlfriend in her early twenties it is most likely that her attraction is built around financial security for her and to some extent for her family. In exchange, she offers her youth, companionship, her body and sex. That seems a fair trade in anyone’s language!

Many guys though, seem to live in denial. One of my favourite examples of this, was an old chap who had been seeing a young lady and he confided in my friend that one ‘problem’ was that the girl in question was a virgin (ho, hum) that she spoke no English and had only been working in the bar for one week when he had met her (heh, heh, at least the ‘virgin’ bit was new) Anyway some time later, he came to see my friend again to tell him of his latest problem. He had VD. To my friends amazement, this otherwise intelligent chap said with a straight face that he didn’t know you could catch VD from making love to a virgin. My friends delicious comment to him was ‘It must be an immaculate infection!’

Men who go into these relationships with much younger women with their eyes wide open are the happiest chaps in Pattaya. As long as they take reasonable care of their lady, they receive far more in return. When you think of lonely old geezers in the west, retired, wife passed away, kids grown up, modest pension, frightened to go out because of the vicious gangs roaming the streets and freezing their way through the bitterly cold winters, unlikely to meet a companion due to a lack of social occasions. OR they can move to Pattaya, live the tropical lifestyle, with good weather virtually the whole year, certainly never icy cold. There is a vast social network and ample opportunity to find a charming companion and plenty of time to find the right one, no need to rush into anything!

For younger guys just here to have a good time and scour the bars for the best looking women and to meet as many as possible, a couple of quick tips. First, be aware that Pattaya bar girls have a spy network that makes the CIA and even Mossad look like rank amateurs. They WILL find out if you have been with another girl and it can get a little ugly! One thing to really avoid with a bar girl isnot paying her after a night of Kama Sutra frolics, ESPECIALLY if she says she doesn’t want any.

Some chaps take a perverse sense of pride from the fact that they got a free shag from a hooker, as though that makes them Brad Pitt or that they are such a stud that the girl was pleasured as never before and wouldn’t dream of asking for money. These girls almost always turn out to be the most expensive or the most trouble. I had a French friend in Bangkok, young guy, good looking and trendy and he made a habit of this.

As he liked to hop around from one (free) girl to another, he received increasingly hostile receptions in bars in Patpong. It escalated to situations where girls were screaming at him and even on one occasion, throwing a drink in his face. My advice? Simple. Pay the girl for her time. This way you stay within the rules and the girl has no claim on you and no right to get upset if you choose another.

For those looking for something more than just horizontal pleasures (though as Woody Allen famously said about casual sex, ‘As empty experiences go, it’s a pretty good one!’) there is good news. I have several friends who are in long term relationships with truly wonderful, beautiful, intelligent Thai girls and they couldn’t be happier.

For single men of any age, the choice just doesn’t get any better than this….
