Thai Live Pop Music in Pattaya
There’s tons of live music in Pattaya but some people like to hear Thai music rather than 70’s and 80’s music from the West. Much of the time the bands will intersperse some popular Thai tunes and songs into their repertoire particularly after about 11.00 o’clock or if requested. The bands are great ones for requests to show off their talents and so if a lot of Thais are in the audience you will get a bit of Thai music as well during the evening, as if only to prove that you are in Thailand. Wherever you go at night in the busy areas such as around Walking Street, Second Road, Sois 6, 7 and 8 and in Pattayaland you will have competing music blaring from every side. Only a little bit of it is Thai, but some venues make small exceptions to this. On the other hand if you go to 2nd or especially 3rd Roads you will find lots of places with live bands. Most of them are restaurants or bars catering for both Thais and ‘Farang’ (the Thai word for foreigners) and they only play Thai music. The type of Thai music they play varies with the establishment. Just off 2nd Road, on Soi 2 opposite Big C there is a very popular night venue which serves food, has 2 live bands every night and is a great night out, particularly if you accompanied by a Thai. Kam Pan is a popular place for groups of girls, especially if it is someone’s birthday, to come along to for a night away from their own bar. The bands are excellent and play some traditional music in the interludes. If you don’t like the music you can watch the ‘footie’ on the big screen whilst the band plays on. There will be more Thais than farang here and you will get a good welcome from the staff and guests alike. They appreciate it if you have a bash at understanding their culture, albeit modern. Along Beach Road , the Sois running off to 2nd Road and particularly around and on Walking Street you will hear irregular bursts of live music coming from different venues and for the price of a drink or a coke you can sit and listen for as long as you like. When they change the music back to 70’s and 80’s tunes just go next door and you may well find Thai pop music. The best bet is to find a restaurant, often a cheap BBQ one, with a live band and take in the whole Thai experience for a few hours. If you like Thai music it is very easy to become a ‘regular’ at these venues. Submitted by : Rod Edwards 07-May-06
